Fr00b AO playthrough video series

Post by Slowclaws » Tue Oct 13, 2015 5:29 pm

Hello fr00bs,

I was thinking in the past week what the topic's title says and since I already have some experience making videos, I thought I would use that to create some content regarding fr00b life in AO. I know there's at least one guy making videos on AO (Callos or by some similar name) and while his videos are good and useful, he's not a fr00b! :P ('ll put a link here to his channel when I can be bothered)

So, basically it would be live commentary on the gameplay and some music subtly thrown into the background, along with whatever comes to my mind, like plans for the character's future (twinking etc) and the like. I'm not expecting a crap ton of views nor do I promise it to be the most amazing series you've ever seen, but I'll try to make it entertaining, which in itself will be a hard task, considering how much of AO just relies on spending time twinking, buffing, looking for teams etc., but I want to give it a go for several reasons.
I plan to do the first recording tomorrow evening and then editing it the following day which will probably result in uploading it on the same day, so stay tuned for the first episode coming this week. ;p

Also, share your ideas, or concerns here, if you have any, would be much appreciated.

This sounds interesting! I hope you're be rolling an exciting class, or at least you'll have an exciting levelling setup. Too many cookie cutters and nightmare rod wielding enfos out there :P

Sounds fun, I'd watch =D> I occasionally watch Caloss2's video's too and I like them, especially his series where he shows a daily mission.

I'm not sure I have anything useful to advise about content, but it would probably have to be solo so you decide your pace so you can take your time when you want to talk about something. Speeding up slow parts is a powerful tool too :)

I was thinking of showing off my now lvl 47 opi crat, which in a sense is a cookie cutter, but hard as hell to make it work at early levels (based around evades and AAD, CDR equipped already). Might make an intro-series with my lvl 1 nanomage enfo (starting on arete, obviously), but as to weapon choice I already made a successful opi piercing enfo currently lvl 107, so I guess I've blowned that for myself. ;p

Any other ideas? Maybe a piercing MA with hezangerine claws right after arete, but then again, I'm not sure if that's enough content or if it's a viable solo option. (And I also leveled a regular fist MA to lvl 160 recently ;p)

Yes, Caloss2, my bad. I'll try to cut down on the length of videos (15-20 mins max/each), because I didn't find it fun watching 40+ minutes videos even with speed ups. Luckily enough I know my way around the magic of editing, so potentially a lot of things could happen in that short(er) period of time.

Thanks for the feedback! :notworthy:

ITD AAD piercing trader would be nifty.

Are instructional videos too boring? Like showing how to make CL and ability buffing imps from tradeskill terminal to finished product? Then demonstrate practical reasons for doing so, like equipping new higher QL belts/ncu or HUD stuff like treatment libraries and new armors.

I think, from practical experience, that many new froob players don't really get the temporary implant buffing thing - the whole process is so alien to other MMORGS character building processes that new people miss out on how interesting AO's twink process really is. So - they get bored or discouraged and quit before being introduced to the other equally entertaining part of AO.

Collect buffing items > planning> design custom implant templates> organize buffing items> plan buff and equip ladders etc.

Oh, haha, yeah, I guess that would be fun to make. :D

I can make tutorials in the future on that, sure, but as for now I don't even know what my target audience is, whether it's just (would-be) returning players longing for nostalgia, newbies or just for myself and this small community.
The first video is more or less done, it's about arete and a nanomage enfo so far, as to what specific character I'd want to record as a playthrough, I'm not sure yet. My crat is tempting, but will give the trader some thought, it works in theory.

Well, the first episode is uploading to youtube since about 2AM (almost 11 hours now lol) and it's at 30%. With this speed it will be available next Monday. :glasses2:

Well, take it with a pinch of salt, quite a few (mostly technical) mistakes here and there, but I hope it's enjoyable for a first episode!
Second episode is in progress now (already recorded), the next video after that is going to be for nubs: a short guide on breeds and professions.

Very nice, I enjoyed watching it (I liked and subscribed :D 8) ) I'd comment too but then I'd have to sign up for that stupid Google+

You mentioned you thought the video was pretty long, but I thought it was fine. Other let's plays I watch often are similar in length, and many are even longer. Last time I started a character on Arete I spent there more than 2 hours, and I already knew the quests. So for a guide it doesn't seem unreasonable to take a little longer over multiple videos :-)

I'm looking forward to episode 2 :o

Thanks for watching! :]

Yeah, some things I said were referring back to parts of the video that I've actually ended up cutting out, it must have been one of those, since the whole footage was slightly over 30 minutes. Either way, it needs more polishing and have to figure out who I'm making these let's plays for, because it's not clear to me yet.

Now scratch all what I just said and done.

Deleted my 1st (previous lol) video and redone it completely in shorter and more direct way. Enjoy.

I really enjoyed that! I didn't see the old version, but this shorter one is really quite tight and the humour works well. Sub'd... please do more! =D>

What is the significance of the Shiny Sword and what happens when you right click it???

I've been wanting to make some videos too about my 60 MA projects, I don't have somewhere quiet to record audio while I play #-o
Serial "Dublivion" Slacker: Forever gimp
Myhealsare "Fullysikmate" Youdig: One of these days he will hit things gud
"Dangerwoman" 10,000 alien kills and counting
ToTW "Munkeemagik" Trasher: Forever twinking
"Subharmonic" There's no school like the old school

Thank you, glad you enjoyed, there's more to come :]

Shiny Sword is really just a bad habit of mine (slight OCD hehe) to grab because when you right click it gives you a mission to give it to a reet NPC and it rewards you with the composite nano skill nano.
I used to do it every time I rolled a new neutral alt (and I've rolled quite a few) and I just didn't want to spend 100k credits for each and one of them for every composite. Since ICC and the new (very expensive) Neutral shops were implemented I just thought I might as well save some credits.

That's the reason but would've been too boring to explain in the video. :]

Edit: had to re-upload due to the render messing up sound, link corrected to the working version.
