a pretty old mmorpg "The Sage of Ryzom" has turned f2p for an unknown duration (pretty like what funcom did with classic AO)

Looks pretty interesting!

To those who have tried the game: How would you rate it? I'd like to have an idea before downloading 1.5GB of installation files.

Oooh they finally made it free for real? Last time I tried it was "free" but you got limited to only a few levels and only the starter area.
The game itself looked nice to me even though my machine couldn't handle it :S

pretty nice Experience system, a bit similar to morrowind one.
well i explain, you dont get experience globally but in each branch (Fight, Magic, Craft, Gathering) , and each branch has 200 levels where you specialize at 20, 50, 100, 150 (pretty like title levels).
the more you fight you gain experience and levels in fight branch (wich specialize into melee or Artilelry, both specialize again into something i dont know etc...), the more you cast offensive spells or support spells in team you gain xp and levels in magic branch. and the same by gathering ressources and crafting items (btw crafting system is uber too).

the good thing with this is that you are not limited to one class, but you can switch to any domain when you want ^^.
----------------
its Sci fi too (not a Sci like AO or star wars but its sci fi too ^^)

i'm playing it while dynabosses repop :p and it roxx

Ooooo! I love Morrowind!

Sounds pretty interesting, all in all. Will check out the requirements a bit later, my lappie might not be able to handle it.

I remember seeing this on MMORPG.com and it looked interesting to give it a shot for a while but not that interesting to justify paying for. Might DL it and see if it's worth the effort.

Erm, I think its just the beginner island that is open currently.

Didn't see any statement saying the mainland is available.

But the beginner island still big enough for lots of fun (solo or team). I really missed the stance planning and yubos *sob*.

Read through the post and seems the mainland will be available as well. I remember it was lagging HORRIBLY when I tried it for the first time but considering I got triple the RAM and a way better video card it might run decently. Outside of the lag I LOVED the skill system. How you can combine and balance all sorts of aspects of a spell for example. I remember one of the things I loved the most about morrowind was the custom spells ("Cold Fire" ftw).

Maybe I didn't read the entire post but from what I did it sounded like there were only a limited amount of new free accounts to be had, and they were all used up already?

I played it a looonggg time ago....IIRC it didn't have all it's features implemented yet at the time I first played it. It seemed interesting however and I made 2 characters and played it for about a month....but It's been so long ago I can't really remember most of it. hmm, I've played so many MMO's they all get jumbled together after a while...lol

What kind of movement and attack system does the game incorporate?

I'm kind of interested in that too:) (movement and attack system)

Has anyone downloaded the game and tried it yet? The description that gandoula gave us a few posts back sounded quite interesting, but how about the every-day-playstyle? Is it laggy? Are the controls ok? Is the story interesting? etc.

I am considering of downloading it, so I'm curious:)

From what I remember, movement and combat is nothing out of the ordinary.

Anyway, maybe a couple strong points of Ryzom:
  • The most beautiful MMORPG I've ever seen. French artists just rule :D
  • Vabla noted the customization feature of actions already. For example, you can define a healing spell which heals health and sap (sap is something like mana) and has some area effect on top of it. To offset such a powerful spell you have to offset it with payment of health, sap, casting time, casting range and so on. You can also heal health twice instead of a combination of sap and health and so on, or create a spell which is less powerful, but can be casted faster or over greater range; I guess you get the drift. Same goes for weapon combat, crafting and foraging.
  • If you got the time (and patience) at your hands, you can learn more or less everything. There is no level as such, only the 4 main skill trees, and each skill level gives you some skill points, which can be used to either increase some stat or buy additional actions or stanzas (which are the "bricks" actions are made of). And yes, skill tree, because at certain skill levels a skill splits up into more specialized subskills, i.e. weapon combat splits into melee and ranged, both splits later into the different weapon categories and so on.
  • Player crafting ftw.
  • Ryzom Ring! Create your own adventures :)
  • The middleware the game is based on ("NeL") is GPL software.
