AO influences

Post by Matammyr » Sat Mar 02, 2013 7:15 am

I would have to think that System Shock 2 was a tremendous influence on AO. Especially the general esthetics of the game world. Even accounting for the general cyberpunk setting of both, I think the similarities are undeniable.

Same thing with the film Johnny Mnemonic. You look at that, and you look at the pre-SL AO world, early concept art (especially of the cities), and lore, you could tell it was a favorite among the designers.

What do you guys think? I'm sure there has to be more. I come across media of all types that reminds me of AO, but these are the only two that come to mind right now.

Blade Runner.
I was kinda disappointed during my first team missions in rome when the bosslevel was not on the top floor of the building with the team fighting the endboss in the rain.

I see a lot of people say that, but I don't see it. I agree a lot of the Omni architecture looks like stuff from Blade Runner, but the big thing with that movie was the AI and replicants. Bots in AO are pretty far from being able to convincingly mimic the human mind, or even looking human. Even the cyborgs are pretty unsophisticated and have a distinct non-human appearance.

Borgs say lines from Blade Runner when you fight them, though.

There's plenty of Neuromancer in AO too. That reminds me, I'm due for a reread.

Oh man, Neuromancer for sure.

I forgot if borgs say "Human, all too human," but that's from Nietzsche.
